Most of us would agree that the place to get away from it all in the state is in the Upper Peninsula. Far removed from the bustle of big city life in the Lower Peninsula, the UP takes you to lush scenery, small town charm, and miles of open road where you can enjoy losing track of time for a spell. There are, of course, plenty of other destinations throughout the state where you can relax as well. We have highlighted some, just for you, wary Michigander.
- Michigan State Route 119
Doug Kerr/Flickr One of my favorite things to do to get a quick taste of nature is take a scenic drive. And what better scenic drive is there in the state than Michigan Highway 119, which takes you through Harbor Spring, Cross Village, and during the fall gives you a kaleidoscope of colors?
- The Inn at Bay Harbor
Facebook This lakeside resort places you in perfect proximity to the water, which provides therapeutic qualities for many people.
- Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula
Facebook This vineyard near Traverse City may be the relaxing, romantic getaway you need with your honey.
- Negwegon State Park

- Bete Grise Beach
J Fleming/Flickr The sand on this beach on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula is said to sing… During summertime, could there possibly be better music to your ears?
- Brevort-Naubinway, Lake Michigan
Facebook Completely void of modern amenities like bathrooms, this beach on Lake Michigan along U.S. 2 in the UP, is a relaxing, tranquil place where you can enjoy sugary, sandy beaches.
- Grand Mere Beach
