Portlanders are a unique group of people, that much like people everywhere else, come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. While we have both enjoyed and hated our time in the spotlight as comic relief on Portlandia, some of the stereotypes about the people from the City of Roses are tired and played out. Here are 8 stereotypes about Portlanders that we would be fine with letting go.
- All Portlanders Are Weird
Scott Beale / Flickr Sure, it is our unofficial motto, but that doesn’t mean that there is not plenty of good old-fashioned normal here too.
- We Are Not All Ducks Fans
Wolfram Burner / Flickr You would think that Portlanders bleed green, but in fact, there are plenty of Beavers fans throughout the city too. The Civil War is replayed annually in the pitting OSU and UO against each other for an epic battle.
- Nature Is Not Everyone’s Favorite Thing
Alise Carter / Flickr We may be known as treehuggers, but there are plenty of things to do other than nature outings here. With a thriving music, arts, and theater scene, there is much more to the city than just nature.
- Our Diet Is Not All Liquid
Daniel Cederholm / Flickr Coffee and beer do make up part of the diet here, but we also like local food, street food, and award-winning food too.
- We Are A City Of Bikers
Ian Sane / Flickr With just 7% of commuters riding bikes to work, we are much higher than the national average of .5%, but don’t be fooled: there are still the other 93% who drive or take the bus or train, making our roads rather crowded.
- We Love Recycling
Meriweather Lewis Elementary School / Flickr We do care about the environment and want to help protect it, but the actual act of separating garbage takes awhile to get used to. While as a whole, Portlanders support recycling, it is just something that we have grown accustomed to and comply with for the better good of society, not necessarily because we love doing it.
- We All Have A Dog
jill, jellydonut … whatever / Flickr Not everyone has a dog. Some people have chickens, ponies, goats, and other animals that you may consider livestock in other regions of the country.
- Portlanders Are So Nice
neilfein / Flickr Ok, well this one is pretty true and we are happy to claim this one. Portlanders are happy to chat up just about anyone anywhere, but that is not to say we don’t have jerks here like everywhere else too.
What do you think? Are there anymore Portland stereotypes that you would like to put to rest now?
