We’ve talked before about goosebump-inducing places in the 716 that will cause quite the fright, but if you’re wondering where the best of the best places are to spot a ghost in Buffalo (or if you’re searching for a spooky tale to tell around the campfire), keep these nine haunted locations in mind.
- Buffalo Central Terminal (495 Paderewski Drive)
phil miller - Flickr The Central Terminal is one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in Buffalo. Rumor has it this abandoned train station isn’t quite so abandoned after all - many people have reported seeing floating orbs and vanishing spirits roaming the interior.
- H.H. Richardson Complex (444 Forest Avenue)
Richardson Olmsted Campus - Facebook The Richardson Complex has seen quite a bit of revitalization thanks to the newly opened Hotel Henry, but stories of the psychiatric ward’s eery history will give you the chills! Spirits and souls of the mentally ill and “incurable” are thought to still dwell in the building.
- Shea’s Performing Arts Center (646 Main Street)
Shea’s Performing Arts Center - Facebook Shea’s is home to several touring Broadway shows throughout the year, and apparently also home to the ghost of Shea, the once-owner of the theatre. People have reported door slamming, lights flashing, and some patrons have even seen sightings and heard someone asking, “Isn’t this place magnificent?” before Shea quickly vanishes. Spooky!
- Town Ballroom (681 Main Street)
Chantal L. - Yelp Town Ballroom is a popular spot for concert-goers in the Queen City, but when the music stops, sounds of parties and ghost sightings start in the basement of this old speakeasy.
- Saint Mary’s School for the Deaf (2253 Main Street)
Buffalo Underground: THIS is WNY - Facebook More like Saint Mary’s School for the Dead? If you ask some people in Buffalo, they would confirm that this place hosts ghosts of nuns on the third floor of the school where the dorms used to be. Some people have even seen the bell swaying back and forth, although it never rings.
- U.S.S. The Sullivans (1 Naval Park Cove)
7 Eyewitness News WKBW - Facebook Located at Canalside in the Naval Park, U.S.S. The Sullivans is an impressive naval ship with a whole lot of history. Five brothers (the Sullivans) perished while serving in the Navy and apparently one of them (“George”) still stays on board, pulling harmless pranks on visitors.
- Iron Island Museum (998 East Lovejoy Street)
Iron Island Museum - Facebook Iron Island is considered the most haunted place in Buffalo, and if you read up on the history of this place, it’s not hard to see why! This building was once a church and then turned into a funeral home, and is home to several “resident ghosts,” who aren’t afraid to make themselves seen and heard to visitors. There have been several sightings in this spot - so enter if you dare!
- Rolling Hills Asylum (11001 Bethany Center, East Bethany)
www.rollinghillsasylum.com This one requires a bit of a travel from the city, but we couldn’t leave it off the list. Rolling Hills Asylum is one of the most haunted asylums in the country, and is still open for tours today. Try your luck (or lack thereof) at spotting a ghost from this old haunted asylum.
- Lockport Caves (5 Gooding Street, Lockport)
Learner - TripAdvisor Still a bit outside of the city, the Lockport Caves offer underground ghost tours of their caves, with several reporting seeing shadows, faces in the water and on the walls of the caves, and hearing voices, moans, and footsteps while touring. Talk about creepy!
