Try as we might to stay, some of us find ourselves living outside of the 716 for certain periods of our lives. To fight that homesick feeling, we flock to Bills Backer bars and local chicken wing joints in hopes of finding pieces of the Queen City. Even better than finding things from home, though, is finding people who share in our Buffalove. Here are nine ways you can spot someone from Buffalo, no matter how far from home you roam:
- Always sporting Buffalo swag
Research and Design - Facebook Our Buffalo pride runs deep, even when we roam far from home. It might seem obvious, but a surefire way to spot a Buffalonian is by their clothing choices. If you see red, white, and blue (or all of the above in the form of Zubas), chances are, you’ve found a fellow Western New Yorker!
- Wearing New Era Caps
26 Shirts - Facebook Sure, everyone wears New Era Caps. But people from Buffalo tend to have the best collection. The hat company is headquartered here, and we’ve known they were cool since before they were mainstream.
- Making comfortable small talk
CT Senate Democrats - Flickr If someone sparks up conversation with you in the aisles of the grocery store and acts like they’ve known you forever, chances are, they have roots in Buffalo. We’re a city of friendly people - what can we say?
- Smiling at strangers
Antony *** - Flickr Speaking of friendly… Western New Yorkers will almost always give you a nice smile when you make eye contact. It’s a little piece of home that never fades from our habits!
- Driving the speed limit in the snow
Sharon - Flickr The white stuff doesn’t bother us much, especially when it starts to accumulate on the roads. Buffalonians are pretty experienced in driving in the snow and navigating through the slush.
- Alternatively… driving slow in the rain
BriarCraft - Flickr We don’t mind a bit of precipitation, but for whatever reason, we just can’t get used to driving when it pours. You’ll see people from Buffalo utilizing their caution lights more during a downpour than you will in a blizzard.
- Sunbathing on the first 70º day of spring
Kerry Lannert - Flickr Our winter skin craves the sun come April, and you better believe we’ll be outside soaking up the rays as soon as the temperatures start to warm in the spring! If you spot someone outside in their bathing suits when it’s hardly 70º, you can probably safely assume they’re from around here.
- Stocking up on the real essentials before a blizzard
Scott Schiller - Flickr When most people stock up on french toast ingredients (milk, eggs, and bread), Buffalo natives flock towards the more essential aisles: chips, beer, and Bison dip.
- Always rooting for the underdog
Buffalo Bills - Facebook Years of supporting our teams have given us a soft spot for Cinderella stories. Even if our Bills and Sabres don’t make the playoffs, you’ll find us rooting for the underdog in most situations.
Have you found people from home while you’ve been outside of the City of Good Neighbors? It seems we can’t avoid bumping into Buffalonians wherever we go! Tell your favorite stores and how you spotted your fellow Western New Yorkers in the comments!
