During the early 1960s, urban renewal programs threatened to close the church, but the congregation successfully petitioned public officials to allow the church to remain at its Broadway location. This building is so unique and beautiful.

The Cathedral of the Assumption is a cathedral and mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. An interesting piece of history about this cathedral is that it was nearly destroyed after its construction,due to the riots on Bloody Monday on August 6, 1855. Anti-immigration and anti-Catholic Protestants attacked German and Irish Catholic neighborhoods, resulting in the deaths of 22 people. Luckily for the church, it remained after the incident, but those who committed these violent crimes went free without any convictions.

- St. Paul’s German Evangelical Church
Flickr / Brent Moore This church has not been in use for some time, at least not as it was originally intended to be used. Today, the space is rented out for use as a medical office due to its proximity to so many hospitals in the area. It’s a beautiful location that will hopefully be preserved for many decades to come.
