Why spend a bunch of money to travel outside of the state when there are some pretty cool things to do right here in Illinois? A state-cation most certainly is in order, as the buzz from the holidays has worn off but we are not yet into spring. While many might suggest Chicago as the vacation you should go on–and I agree, there is a whole lot to do–I recommend heading to Springfield for your next vacation.

For those of us not from the area, and particularly those of us who live north of I-80, we think of Springfield as just the place where politicians might/might not get things done. But there is a whole lot more to this city! Here are some things you must do when you visit Springfield.

  1. Visit the capitol building.

  1. See the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Denise Krebs/Flickr One of the best presidents ever, Lincoln has an impressive presidential library. Aside from an absolutely gorgeous design, there are plenty of exhibits and even reenactments sometimes.

  1. Eat a horseshoe.

  1. Tour the Illinois State Museum.

Mike Linksvayer/Flickr The official museum of natural history in Illinois, this museum has tons to offer as far as exhibits relating to biology, zoology, and geology.

  1. Enjoy the Henson Robinson Zoo.

  1. Reflect at Lincoln’s Tomb.

  1. View the Dana-Thomas House.

  1. Get your kicks on Route 66.
