Alaska has many natural wonders that leave people with their jaw to the floor, but there are also some really crazy man made wonders that are equally as extraordinary. Some of the places around our state are fascinating in an odd way and they will surely capture your attention at least for an extra second. Here are some of the odd places from around Alaska that will have you stopping to take a second look…
- Aurora Ice Museum
Eric | Flickr This year-round ice environment will leave you with your jaw dropped. The next time you’re in Fairbanks stop by to see some incredible ice carvings.
- Ice caves!
Andrew E. Russell | Flickr For some seriously cool ice caves you need to visit some of the glaciers around the state like Mendenhall in Juneau.
- Proenneke’s Cabin
Caitlin Marr | Flickr Take a closer look at the naturalists way of living in Alaska when you visit Proenneke’s cabin.
- Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel
Travis | Flickr This is not your normal tunnel. In fact, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in North America running under one mountain. Wow!
- Lady of the Lake
lns1122 | Flickr Just outside of North Pole, Alaska is this abandoned plane crash known as Lady of the Lake. This plane was submerged years ago and now attracts a wide crowd of tourists and explorers.
- Totem Poles at Potlatch Park
Petruha | Flickr Get a real look into Native Alaskan culture when you visit the Potlatch Totem Park. It’s extraordinary!
- Burial Spirit Houses
Raymond Bucko, SJ | Flickr The burial ground in Eklutna outside of Anchorage is a sacred place for many. It surely will have you looking twice but I must say it’s well worth the visit.
- Igloo City
Jeremy Reding | Flickr This abandoned hotel on the side of the highway is quite the sight to see. There are rumors of ghosts wandering the building late at night so keep an eye out if you’re passing by!
- H.A.A.R.P
Doc Searls | Flickr H.A.A.R.P stands for the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program and trust me it will have you looking twice. The set up they have is quite spectacular but contrary to popular rumors there is no death ray OR weather control device. This program merely monitors high-frequency radio waves.
Have you seen any of these before? What else would you add to the list?
