It’s that time of year where you step out of the house in a cozy fleece with dew on the ground, and by lunchtime you could be suffering from heatstroke. While the weather may be unpredictable, there are a few things you can depend on this time of year. It’s easy to FALL in love with Vermont (see what I did there?)

  1. Foliage Season.

Flickr/Kimberlykv Happy foliage everyone! The colors are popping and, as always, it’s a stunning time to be in Vermont. A message to the trees: put on your shades and act cool. Everyone is coming to see you and the paparazzi will be out in full force.

  1. Pumpkin and Apple flavored everything.

Flickr/Anthony Quintano Coffee, muffins, pie, tea, donuts - you name it and we’ll try it.

  1. Halloween.

Flickr/Adam McIntosh Costumes are brainstormed, purchased, or better yet - made. Mental images of pumpkins are being carved in your head. I could do without candy displays being set up in August though.

  1. Sweater Weather!

Flickr/Rya Pie Autumn isn’t just a season, it can be a fashion statement. Embrace this time between flip flops and snowshoes. The key is crisp, comfy and cozy.

  1. The beginning of the seasonal decorations!

Flickr/Kevin Dooley It’s so exciting to pull your decorations out of storage and carefully display them around your home. We start off with pumpkins, mums, spiders and ghosts. Soon after, turkeys and pilgrim hats will start popping into the mix. Black Friday brings evergreens, mistletoe and stockings hung with care. Inevitably, at the beginning of January, you will be so tired of all the cutesy clutter you’ll stuff it away until next year so you can get excited all over again.

  1. Mm.. Mmm.. Good.

Flickr/yummysmellsca Yup! It’s time to get your soup on! Stovetop or crockpot, homemade or from your favorite restaurant, you can never go wrong with a good, hardy soup.

  1. Fairs!

Flickr/Chaim Zvi Apple festivals, craft shows and hay rides. Wear your fall uniform (see #4) and enjoy some pumpkin spiced something (see #2).

  1. Santa is watching!

Flickr/Alan Cleaver In some households, the threat of Santa clause witnessing their antics will often snap their children into stepford-esque behavior. If only for a few minutes, it’s still handy to have in your back pocket.

  1. It’s almost time!

Flickr/M D L You are counting down the days until you can unpack your skis, skates, boards, jackets, boots, hats, goggles, gloves, shovels, ice scrapers, toe warmers and winter tires.

How do YOU know it’s fall?  Comment below and let me know!
