If you’ve moved away from Delaware, there will always be a big part of the First State in your heart. Whether that means you still order scrapple for breakfast even though you know your new diner doesn’t have any, or you tell your new neighbors about the Fire Control towers with way too much excitement, there are some things that you can never truly leave behind.

If you are a Delaware ex-pat, you’ll get a kick out of our latest Delaware list – 9 thoughts that everyone who’s moved away from Delaware has had!

  1. “Wait - those are supposed to be dumplings?”

Flickr / I Believe I Can Fry Delmarva restaurants and homes make the best dumplings in the country - but they’re flat. When you order a delicious-sounding bowl of chicken and dumplings anywhere else, they’re weird and round and doughy. Meh.

  1. “I could really go for a bucket of boardwalk fries.”

Flickr / bigbirdz No, McDonalds, Wendy’s or your local favorite fry spot are just not as good

  1. “If you say Dela-WHERE? one more time…”

Flickr / Global Good Group It’s not funny. It’s never been funny. Not the first time we heard it, not the second, not the six-hundredth. So please just stop.

  1. “New. Ark.”

Flickr / Yu-Jen Shih Not Newark or “New-erk”. It’s New. Ark.

  1. “It IS nice to not worry about beach traffic!”

Flickr / Mike Mahaffie No Friday afternoon beach traffic in the summer? Sign me up. Other states seem to have better luck when it comes to tourists flooding towards the shores - or maybe they just have a better road system.

  1. “I miss Delaware ice cream.”

Facebook / Woodside Farm Creamery The Delaware Creameries in the state are some of the best in the country, and the turn out some delicious frozen treats. Trying to find good homemade ice cream anywhere else isn’t easy, and even if you do, it’ll never be as good as Woodside.

  1. “Landlocked blues are too real.”

Flickr / Bob Mical I drive across the country a few times a year, and every time I hit a point in the midwest where I feel landlocked and it’s a seriously suffocating feeling. I don’t think I could ever really live that far from the ocean, or the beautiful Delaware bay.

  1. “So that’s what mountains look like.”

Flickr / David Wilson Delaware is so flat, that even when I travel out to West Virginia or up to the ADKs, I’m stunned by the mountains. I don’t think I’d ever get used to them.

  1. “No Wawa?!?!?!?!”

Flickr / Laura Siegert One of the hardest things about leaving Delaware is leaving Wawa. Royal Farms, Quick Check, Sheetz… they’re just not the same!

If you start to miss the Diamond State too much, remind yourself that it’s not all flowers with our list of the biggest struggles of life in Delaware, and maybe you’ll be happy you stayed away!
