Things outsiders think about when they think Buffalo: snow, “Buffalo wings,” snow, Super Bowl losses, snow, major comebacks… and did we mention snow? While these are all definitely a part of life in the 716, there are plenty of traits you might not expect when you move to Buffalo. Here are nine of them:

  1. Our weather gets hot

Zen Skillicorn - Flickr Like, hot hot. While you might expect snow and lots of it, It isn’t uncommon for days in the summer to push 90º (with what feels like 90% humidity to match).

  1. We have a lot of sunny days

“It’s gonna be a bright sunshiny day” for an average of 155 days in Buffalo, according to bestplaces.net. That’s more than Los Angeles gets at 147.

  1. We actually DON’T get the most snow in New York

Curtis Anderson - Flickr While we’re not too far behind, Syracuse actually holds that title (and the title for most in the country, actually). We’ll gladly let them keep their rank at #1!

  1. Our bars are open until 4 AM

Kristian20 - Flickr If you thought you were a night owl before, you might want to think again. Our night scene rages on until 4 AM, well pass the normal 2 AM last call.

  1. We have several beaches

Sunset Bay, USA - Facebook Buffalo beaches? You read that right! You might not expect it, but we have several great sandy spots to enjoy the sunshine.

  1. It’s relatively inexpensive to live here

Dan Moyle - Flickr While state taxes might be high, the cost of living in Buffalo is actually relatively low compared to other major cities.

  1. How far we actually are from New York City

kaysha - Flickr Speaking of other major cities… you’ll quickly learn that saying you live in New York means people think you live in NYC. We’re actually a lengthy car ride or quick flight away from the Big Apple.

  1. How much history the city has

Only In Buffalo - Facebook (PC Adam Moss - Flickr) Buffalo is full of historical sites, national historic landmarks, and more! You’ll be surprised to see how many you come across as you wander the city.

  1. How many beautiful buildings there are downtown

Aneurysm9 - Flickr City Hall, Louis Sullivan designs, the Electric Tower, the Gold Dome, the list goes on and on. Our architecture is world-renowned in Buffalo.
