Well, my fellow Texans, 2015 has been one for the books. We’ve seen it all – the good, the bad, the ugly. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve had fun, and we’ve experienced some heart-wrenching, jaw-dropping moments together. Below is a list of 9 particularly shocking events that occurred in our state this year.
- Our favorite ice cream brand turned deadly for a few months, forcing us to either lower our standards or boycott ice cream completely until its return.

- A raging flood enveloped the hillcountry earlier this year. Some say it was the worst natural disaster Austin has ever seen.

- A San Antonio woman found a bag of cocaine in her individually wrapped granola bar.

Something about that just doesn’t add up.
- A pitbull who ran away from San Marcos during the summer flooding was found in California!
Flickr/haquintero Police found Thor, the dog, wandering around Crescent City, California, confirming his identity with the microchip his owners had implanted in him at an earlier date. A California truck driver offered to take Thor back to San Marcos because his owners couldn’t afford the $1500 shipping cost. It’s still a mystery as to how he ended up 2,000 miles away from home.
- Students at Texas A&M built a memorial for a dead cockroach found in the anthropology building.
Imgur/jimmyevil While most people would kill any creepy crawly creature before even stopping to think about it, these students decided to honor the dead roach in an extravagant way. They left gifts, wrote poetry, and built a funeral pyre to cremate the bug, named Rosie, and send her on her way peacefully. Was it an act of kindness or an extremely over-the-top joke? We’ll never know. RIP Rosie.
- A truck carrying onions caught fire near Frying Pan Road in Bushland.

- An F4 tornado devastated the Garland/Rowlett area just a few days ago.

- The same storm system that produced the tornado also brought record amounts of snow to the panhandle.
Flickr/wasifmalik Forecasters predicted a “historic blizzard” for the Lubbock and Amarillo area, with more than 15 inches of snow and a wind chill as low as 10 below zero. That’s not something you hear about every day in Texas, is it?
