Virginia’s hiking trails are renowned for their beauty, and also for their challenge. Fortunately, not all beautiful trails here require miles and miles of strenuous activity. Sometimes the short and sweet hikes can be just as memorable. That is certainly the case with the Fallingwater Cascades Loop. In just a a little over one mile, hikers will experience lovely streams, waterfalls, and a breathtaking view. You’re sure to enjoy your trek on this Blue Ridge Parkway hidden gem.

larrymac/flickr As you might’ve guessed from the trail name, the loop winds through a series of waterfalls and cascades. Not only will you feast your eyes on beautiful sights throughout the hike, but you’ll also hear the joyful sound of rushing water. The first part of the hike will be characterized by descending down through hemlocks and maple trees until the rapids are made visible.
Patrick Mueller/flickr Although the path can seem a bit steep at times, the trail itself is well-maintained. Built-in steps are provided wherever the terrain might be a bit trickier, and there are also bridges and stepping stones for assistance with crossing streams. Even so, be careful of any stepping stones that could be potentially slippery!

At this point in the hike, you’ll begin to notice the sweeping panoramic views of the mountains. This would be a great point to sit and relax, especially if you’ve brought a picnic along with you.
