About 45 miles of south of the town of Eureka is an area we know as the Black Sands Beach. This oasis consists of 3.5 miles of black sands beach that hugs the coast in a dark beauty beyond our wildest dreams. What makes this gem even more spectacular is that it’s tucked in between The Lost Coast Trail with a backdrop of tall and mighty trees we know as our majestic Northern California Redwoods.

yelp/erwin b. Men, this is called a map. Most of you might use a GPS; either way, it’s still okay to ask for directions to get here. Your other half will probably even think more of you if you do. BUT, if you’re trying to get here, one source had this to say: “To find the Black Sand Beach parking lot just turn onto Beach Road from Shelter Cove Road. Getting to Shelter Cove requires an hour-long drive on twisty backroads from Highway 101 in the town of Garberville, CA.”
Take a few hikes while you’re here.
flickr.jennconspiracy There are quite a few of you who enjoy taking long, quiet hikes into the wilderness. In this very area is a trail called The Lost Coast Trail. This kind of hike is not for the faint of heart. It’s about a 4 hour round-trip hike and according to one source you should begin by going North to South so the wind is at your back. Oh, and you must have a bear can and a permit. The rangers will make sure you have both.
Black Sands Beach.
yelp/erwin b An incredible piece of coastline. If you’re enjoying a hike along the Lost Coast Trail, the permit instructs you to use the bathroom along the beach. Seriously. Dig a hole where high tide will take care of nature’s bathroom for you. I’m not even kidding.
Up close and personal.

Campers will enjoy it here, too!
flickr.rick mccharles If my hint about there being bears around here wasn’t enough to scare you off, you are the type to want to camp, I’m sure of it. There are many different camping spots so make sure to bring everything you’d need to rough it.
Beauty beyond words.
flickr bureau of land management Bring along your camera to snap photos at every turn. It’s an oasis on steroids. The ocean and the forest make a great team with it comes to natural beauty.
As night falls…

The night explodes with stars.

We LOVE it here, don’t you? When was the last time you filled up the gas tank and headed true north? It’s time to enjoy yourself again and adventure in the very state you love so much. How about you? What hidden oasis are you keeping all to yourself? If you feel like sharing, we’re all ears!
