We’re always raving about the natural wonders in Georgia that deserve adoration and exploration. There are so many lush waterfalls, high peaks, and gorgeous flora that it’s easy to get lost in nature’s beauty. However, there are also quite a few man-made wonders in the state that are as equally alluring. These places may not have been given to us by Mother Earth herself, but they certainly are enchanting enough to adventure through. Take a look for yourself:
- Lake Lanier, Northeast Atlanta
Flickr Amog u Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir in northern Georgia. It was created by the completion of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River in 1956. Why was this Georgia summer hot spot built? To provide hydroelectricity, navigation, flood control and water supply for Atlanta.
- Providence Canyon— Canyon Rd, Lumpkin, GA 31815
Flickr Garrick Morgenweck This man-made mini Grand Canyon is one of the most visited spots in the state. Its gullies are close to 150 feet deep, and were created by some terrible farming techniques. It’s amazing that something that went wrong turned into something so right.
- Lilburn Temple (BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir)—460 Rockbridge Rd NW, Lilburn, GA 30047
Flickr Greg Williams More than 34,000 pieces of custom hand-carved stones were assembled to build this awe-inspiring Hindu Temple. The stones are comprised of Turkish limestone, Italian marble, and Indian pink sandstone.
- Stone Mountain Memorial Carving—1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd, Stone Mountain, GA 30083
Flickr Jim Bowen The Confederate Memorial Carving depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis, and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Under the carving, families can pack a picnic or stay into the night for the laser light show.
- Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden Foundation—200 N Lewis St, Summerville, GA 30747

He transformed this piece of Georgia land from a swamp into his very own paradise – grounds teeming with more than 40,000 different pieces of art made from just about anything; marbles, tiny statues, velvet paintings, mirrors, and tons of concrete.
- The Georgia Guidestones—Hartwell Hwy, Elberton, GA 30635
Flickr Dina Eric These mysterious man-made, granite slabs were erected in 1980. A set of 10 guidelines is inscribed on the structure in eight modern languages detailing new “rules” that we must follow as a human race in order to survive.
- The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist—222 E Harris St, Savannah, GA 31401
Flickr Dominik “Dome” As the the Mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah, this cathedral is also one of the most beautiful in the state. With ornate decorations, and elaborately crafted details, this religious man-made gem is a photographer’s dream.
- Bellwood Quarry—Johnson Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30318
Flickr haley This remarkable and diverse man-mined rock quarry in Georgia will be undergoing some big changes in the future. The city of Atlanta is transforming it into a reservoir, and the hundreds of acres around it will eventually become Atlanta’s biggest park.
