Virginia is a state filled with some of the best dining in the country. And you know that’s true when you could drive to feasibly any corner of the state and find an incredible restaurant. Aside from the lucky locals, most folks don’t often visit Topping, Virginia, one of the state’s eastern most towns. Located right on the Rappahannock, this place also happens to be the site of Merroir, a fantastic restaurant that will make your trip to Middlesex County more than worthwhile.

Merroir/Facebook Merroir might not be in one of Virginia’s major (or even medium-sized) cities, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a secret. There are plenty of folks who happily go out of their way to this beautiful part of the state where the scenery and seafood are equally delectable.

Garrett G./Yelp Merroir is located on the banks of the Rappahannock River, just a stone’s throw from the exact spot where the oysters are harvested. What sets this spot apart is not just the location, but also how personalized everything is. The menu is appropriate to the season, the produce fits the region, and the every detail down to the beer and wine list accentuates the experience.

Michael C./Yelp The restaurant was started by the Rappahannock Oyster Company, a family-run business that set out on a mission to reinstate Virginia’s role in harvesting oysters. It took only ten years for this business to succeed to such an extent that Virginia is now the leading state in oyster production along the East Coast.

Jeremy R./Yelp Merroir is a symbol and celebration of Virginia’s seafood. Described as a “tasting room,” it’s a scaled-back version of the typical restaurant, although you won’t find that anything is lacking. Seafood is either served raw or cooked on an outdoor grill right near the patio. Diners can choose from oysters, clams, shrimp, and ceviche to other artisanal plates such as cheese boards, crab cakes, stews and more.
PizzaTheHut X./Yelp Keep you eye out for hardier menu items too, as the menu is always changing depending on the season.
Jill D./Yelp Who knows…this “middle of nowhere” spot may start to feel like your home away from home after so many delicious experiences.
