If not for a fateful decision in the mid-1930s, this charming little village along South Carolina’s Coastal Highway 17 might not exist.

Few people know the original U.S. Highway 17 that runs along South Carolina’s coast actually passed through Florence and Marion, South Carolina – according to the Wikipedia listing. The highway was developed in the middle 1920s, but in 1935 the decision was made to re-route Highway 17 to run through Myrtle Beach and Georgetown. The extra traffic may have been the boost this small village needed.
