There are many wonderful places located throughout Nevada, some of which I consider to be underrated. Many places don’t receive the same amount of attention others do. The attention that many do receive is mostly from locals, not out-of-towners.

Listed below are 10 places in Nevada that I consider to be underrated even though they may receive a lot of local attention. These places definitely deserve to be checked out.

Established in 1938, Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in southwestern Elko County and northwestern White Pine County. It encompasses nearly 40,000 acres of wetlands in the Ruby Valley and serves as a habitat for hundreds of species of native and migratory birds and mammals. The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge area is BEAUTIFUL and a definite must-see!

The Nevada State Railroad Museum preserves the railroad heritage of Nevada. What makes this museum extra special is that most of the equipment on display was obtained from Hollywood studios, where they were featured in movies and television shows. This interesting railroad museum offers train rides, handcar rides, lectures, changing exhibits, and so much more. It’s the perfect place for train enthusiasts. Lamoille Canyon, known as the “Grand Canyon” of Nevada, is the largest valley in the Ruby Mountains. It’s located in Elko County and is a definite must-see. Many people believe the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Drive is one of the best drives in Nevada. I couldn’t agree more. The scenery is absolutely GORGEOUS!

Minden Meat and Deli is family owned and operated and specializes in craft beers, tri-tip sandwiches, burgers, etc. Their burgers, which are made with Creekstone Farms Choice Angus Beef, are some of the best you’ll ever sink your teeth into. What makes them even more delicious are the buns. Their brioche buns are delivered daily from Truckee Sourdough. If you’re a local, be sure to check this wonderful restaurant out. Sand Harbor is Lake Tahoe’s finest beach, and it offers fun activities such as swimming, boating and seasonal open-air entertainment with mountain views. This beach is a great place to relax and the scenery is SPECTACULAR! Not to mention, the water is CRYSTAL CLEAR! What more could you ask for?

Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, spent most of his Virginia City days writing for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper. This historic newspaper building now houses the Mark Twain Museum. A few of the items that are on display include Mark Twain’s desk, chair, books and most of the original furnishings and equipment from his pressroom.
