Are we insane? Or just really unique? I’d rather go with the latter. Here are a few weird things that Missourians do that tend to baffle outsiders.
- Burn the ends of our BBQ food.
Jenny K./Yelp Burnt ends are far from a mistake. In fact, its one of the best styles of BBQ you can have in Missouri.
- Scream our lungs out.
The Kansas City Chiefs/Facebook When it comes to fan support, we’re not ones to keep quiet. In fact, we hold the Guinness World’s Record for reaching the loudest noise level at an NFL game. So, we may look like we’re out of our minds, but at least we have our names in the record books.
- Drink in the streets…at 10 a.m.
Mike T./flickr When it comes to Mardi Gras in St. Louis, anything goes. Well, not anything. But wearing ridiculous outfits, drinking in the streets and begging for beads? Totally acceptable.
- “Wait it out” during tornadoes.
Vincent Parsons/flickr Missourians are so stubborn and used to tornadoes, that it’s not common for us to just take our sweet time when heading home during a tornado. Or throw a rowdy tornado party.
- Wear shorts in 50 degree weather.
Lisa Moffatt/flickr When it drops into single digits, anything over 40 degrees is basically tropical during the winter.
- Throw dinner rolls to customers.
Photo Credit At Lambert’s Cafe, servers walk up and down the aisles throwing dinner rolls to dining patrons. Is it sanitary? I think so. Well, as long as you catch it before it hits the ground.
- Drink wine in a cave.
Derek L./Yelp Cave Vineyards has a cave right next to its vineyard where guests can go to drink the homegrown wine. Maybe it seems a little troll-like, but who cares.
- Take a brewery tour…with horses.
Dan G./Yelp At the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, you’ll not only get to try out delicious beers, but also see the Budweiser Clydesdales.
- Hike the entire Ozark Trail.
541cloran/TripAdvisor Okay, so maybe not all Missourians. But for adventure-seekers and hiking lovers, the 350-mile Ozark trail is a must. It may sound crazy, but the views are gorgeous.
- Top their pizza with a tri-blend of cheeses.
Ryan F./Yelp Provel cheese is most popular in St. Louis, specifically at Imo’s Pizzeria. The block of processed cheese can be bought at most grocery stores and is a blend of cheddar, Swiss and provolone. Some love it, some hate it, but either way, we’re slightly crazy for even creating it.
- Eat fried frog legs.
lindiii1428/TripAdvisor It tastes like chicken…sort of. It may seem weird to out-of-towners, but for a lot of locals, it sounds and tastes delicious.
What type of habits do you catch yourself in that may seem a little bizarre to non-Missourians? Feel free to share in the comments below.
