We’re not crazy. You’re crazy! Buffalonians are best known for our wing-eating expertise, snow-shoveling skills, and diehard football-fandom, but we have several traditions that are a little bit higher on the “weird” scale. You ready, Buffalo natives? Here are 9 crazy traditions you’ll totally get if you’re from Buffalo:

  1. Two words: Pinto Ron

The Sunburian Madman - Flickr I’m going to be honest. I just recently found out about this Buffalo tradition, and I still can’t get over how crazy it is. This man literally gets drenched in ketchup and mustard during Bills tailgates, drinks shots from the holes of a bowling ball, and cooks out of a metal filing cabinet. Party on, Pinto Ron!

  1. Buying butter lambs from the Broadway Market

Patrick Haney - Flickr As soon as the Broadway Market opens, you better believe Buffalonians are flocking to get their hands on a butter lamb (or three)! This might not be a strictly Buffalonian thing, but it’s a tradition we’re proud of nonetheless!

  1. Diving into freezing cold Lake Erie

WNY Polar Plunge - Facebook Who wouldn’t want to throw on their bikini and swim in a freezing cold lake? Each year, hundreds of Buffalonians brave the elements at this crazy tradition. At least it’s for a good cause!

  1. Whipping each other with pussy willows

Dyngus Day Buffalo - Facebook Dyngus Day is not something to be taken lightly in Buffalo. We whip each other with pussy willows without even thinking twice during these epic celebrations! You don’t mess with tradition, after all.

  1. Going nuts over penalty calls

Buffalo Bandits - Facebook “B-O-X!” If you’ve never been to a Bandits lacrosse game, what are you waiting for? Almost everything associated with this intense sport is crazy – in the best way possible!

  1. Playing the Shout song at every wedding

ChesterSpringsVideos - YouTube If you’re a Buffalonian and you don’t play the Shout song at your wedding, are you really a Buffalonian at all? This is one of the most enjoyable Buffalo traditions! (Bonus points if the bride is decked out in a Bills jersey.)

  1. Taking snow day rituals very seriously

Jalan’s Place - Flickr Pajamas inside out and backwards? Check. Flushed ice cubes down the toilet? Check. Performed an epic snow dance? Check, check, and check! Snow day rituals are a Buffalo tradition we take very seriously. (50% of the time they work every time.)

  1. Playing Christmas music starting November 1st

Star 102.5 - Facebook Looking at you, Star 102.5! Listening to Christmas music on the radio starting November 1st is a Buffalo tradition we love to hate (or hate to love, depending on your attitude). Turns out, there IS a limit to how many versions of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer you can listen to in one day before losing your sanity.

  1. Bobbing for wings

National Buffalo Wing Festival - Facebook We saved the weirdest for last with this one! If bobbin for wings in a pool full of blue cheese doesn’t make you cringe, you can check it out firsthand at the Buffalo Wing Fest on Labor Day weekend!

Old habits die hard. What are your favorite traditions as a Buffalonian? Share them with us in the comments below! (The weirder the better!)
