There’s just nothing like a carefree summer day trip. When the weather heats up in Utah, it’s a good idea to head for a cooler climate. The charming little town of Kamas is the perfect destination for a summer day of fun.

Owen Xu/flickr Kamas has about 2,000 residents. It’s a farming/ranching community, nestled at the foot of the Uinta mountains.

Anne Slaughter/flickr Visit the U.S. Forest Service office (50 E. Center Street) to learn about conditions in the mountains, and pick up a map or two.

Then, stop by Samak Smoke House (1937 E Mirror Lake Hwy) to stock up on some fresh jerky and other snacks. If you’re planning on fishing later in the day, pick up a fishing license and whatever fishing gear you need.

JR P/flickr Head up the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. It’s an absolutely gorgeous drive where you’ll be surrounded by pine trees. Roll your windows down and smell that fresh, mountain air.

Ken Lund/flickr Visit Provo River Falls, about 23 miles from Kamas. These falls are stunning, and you can sit and enjoy a picnic lunch while watching them.

Dave Merrill/flickr Cool off by wading in one of the lower pools (the water is super-cold, though).

You’ll find several pretty, little lakes along the way, including Lily Lake, Trial Lake, Lost Lake, Moosehorn Lake and more. Take a stroll around the lake, take some photos, or…

Brandon Dalton/flickr …try your hand at fishing. The best thing about fishing along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway is that if the fish aren’t biting at one lake, you can always try another.

Bryant Olsen/flickr When you get to Mirror Lake, take a hike around the perimeter of the lake, or branch off to one of several trails.

Bryant Olsen/flickr Watch for moose, which are plentiful in the area.
