New Jersey as a whole has been designated the ultimate foodie destination by a variety of publications including Saveur Magazine. Several of our cities and towns have received special attention for their contribution to the global dining scene including Montclair, Princeton, Jersey City, Morristown, Red Bank, New Brunswick and Atlantic City (among others). If you’ve lived here long enough, I don’t need to tell you how lucky we are to live in the Garden State.
And, speaking of the Garden State, New Jersey is a top national producer of blueberries, cranberries, bell peppers, peaches and… asparagus. We’re actually second in the country when it comes to asparagus. With almost 800,000 acres of farmland, we grow LOTS of fresh fruits and veggies. We’ve got bucolic farm towns scattered throughout the state and one is making waves as a Mideast food destination.
Welcome to Long Valley, New Jersey.
Facebook/Ort Farms Long Valley is an unincorporated community within Washington Township, Morris County. It takes up 4.6 square miles and is home to just around 1,986 residents. Formerly known as German Valley, the area sits along Schooley’s Mountain. The Lutheran Church of America was founded here almost three centuries ago. Now, it’s a peaceful agricultural hub, home to several major farms (and a few smaller ones, as well). Pictured is Ort Farms, a local staple since 1916. Visit their farm stand to find raspberries, basil and kale, all harvested on-site - and that’s only just the start! In addition to the delicious produce, they offer story time on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. throughout the summer, pumpkin picking and a corn maze in the fall, occasional farm to table dinners, a farm camp for kids and much more!
But that’s not the only farm in town!
Flickr/Tambako The Jaguar Some of Long Valley’s larger farms include the Totten Family Farm, Mini Mac Farm and Valley Shepherd Creamery. The Totten Family Farm makes their own hops and BBQ rubs. The Valley Shepherd Creamery offers a variety of unique tours, cheese making classes and wine and cheese dinners. Long Valley is definitely as “country” as it comes.
