Here’s the thing: cities are great until they’re not. It’s not too hard to get tired of the traffic, the smog and loud noises. Car horn serenades are only invigorating for so long – if ever. The neat thing about Tennessee? Ol’ Rocky Top boasts some stellar cities, and OH so many diamonds in that beautiful state rough. Here’s a quick peek of our favorites!
- Franklin
Wikipedia This tiny downtown has a historic theater and gorgeous Christmas celebration every year. It’s not the smallest city, which is why it makes number ten, but if you get on the Franklin backroads? You’ll be living the small town life real quick.
- Johnson City
Wikipedia This East Tennessee city has wiggled its way into many a country song, for its old time charm and reflection of the good ol’ days.
- Lynchburg
Wikipedia Legendary home to the Jack Daniel’s distillery, this small town may have a lot of tourists but its tiny size keeps fans of small town life right where they’re at.
- Maryville
Wikipedia Located in the Great Smoky Mountains foothills, Maryville isn’t quite big enough to be big, and since it hardly cracks twenty thousand we aren’t splitting hairs. Gorgeous place, good schools and job opportunities in nearby Knoxville.
- Monteagle
Monteagle Chamber of Commerce The views alone are enough to get us here, ASAP. Just look at those colors!
- Sewanee
Michael Hicks / Flickr Great hiking, wonderful town, and an even better university. There’s really nothing to complain about in Sewanee, except maybe the lack of noise. And are you really going to complain about that…?
- Sweetwater
Wikipedia A picture says a thousand words. Straight from a storybook, Sweetwater is the small town location of your ‘Little House on the Prairie’ dreams.
- Leiper’s Fork
Brent Moore / Flickr Located forty minutes outside Nashville, Leiper’s Fork consists of one main street and a ton of land. The people are kind and the beer is cold, plus you can catch a live show at Puckett’s.
- Tellico Plains
Wikipedia This sweet place has gorgeous views and the kindest people you’ll ever meet. Plus, there were only 880 people in the 2010 census! Tiny and great.
- Watertown
Wikipedia The tiniest little town you ’er did see, Watertown is a sleep place with a drive in movie theater and a pizza place worth the drive. Stuck in time? Most definitely.
