Whether you want to admit it or not, South Carolina is a very valuable state – not only to us, but to the rest of the world as well. We have brought delicious foods, vacation getaways, jaw-dropping sights, musicians, artists, writers, and inventions that no one could do without. Without any more undue procrastination on my part, I’m giving you 20 reasons why the world wouldn’t be able to live with itself without South Carolina and the undeniably awesomeness we have brought with us.

  1. You wouldn’t have Charleston or….

Myrtle Beach to play in on those vacation getaways.

  1. You wouldn’t have a surplus of peaches. Oh, sure you would have some, but the prices would be outrageous because there wouldn’t be as many as there are now.

  1. You would be importing ALL of your tea.

  1. Tires. You would be riding on horses still or you would be importing all those round shoes for your car.

  1. Without South Carolina you wouldn’t have the Shag, with contests held all over the United States.

  1. You would never know what the word “hot” really meant. Thank you Carolina Reaper for letting us know.

  1. There would be no sweet tea. Okay, so maybe someone would have came up with it at some point, but you wouldn’t have had it as early as you had without South Carolina.

  1. And, speaking of sweet tea, we now mix it with Firefly Vodka. Thank you Firefly Distillery in Awendaw.

  1. The world would be sad because there wouldn’t be fried green tomatoes,

shrimp and grits, or

Lowcountry boil. Even if someone else came up with the combinations it wouldn’t taste as good.

  1. Barbecue, mustard based barbecue, vinegar and pepper, heavy tomato, and light tomato…it’s all South Carolina.

  1. You would be deprived of the most amazing sunrises and

the most gorgeous sunsets.

  1. You wouldn’t be able to see the most amazing Angel Oak or…

Louis Dallara/Flickr

know what it’s like to walk under, through, and around the oldest track of hardwood bottomland in the U.S., or…

Jimmy Emerson, DVM/Flickr

see some of the loveliest waterfalls ever.

  1. There would be no Magnolia Plantation gardens, which are the oldest public gardens in the nation, or

M Fletcher/Flickr

Brookgreen Gardens which are not only exceptionally beautiful, but also have the largest collection of statues in the nation, or

wander through the South Carolina Botanical Gardens.

  1. These wouldn’t exist if South Carolina wasn’t here. Sweet Grass baskets grace a lot of homes far and wide.

  1. Sadly, there would be no boiled peanuts. This is very sad indeed.

  1. There wouldn’t be Dizzy Gillespie or so many other musicians that come from South Carolina.

  1. There would be no South Carolina artists such as Witzel, Gaye Ham, Jim Harrison, and so many others.

Peter Miller/Flickr

  1. South Carolinian writers would be a thing of fiction such as Dorothea Benton Frank and quite a few more as well….

  1. There wouldn’t have been sports legends such as Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Mike Burton/Flickr

  1. You wouldn’t have the benefit of our inventors and their inventions such as the submarine, the egg fertilizer, the cotton copper, X-men, and Rice Krispies. Nope, no Rice Krispie treats.

See? What would you do without all of these amazing things that South Carolina has offered? I know, you think that if South Carolina didn’t bring it that someone else would have, but they didn’t did they? Or, it would have been much later than when you did get them. There are so many more things that could have been added to this list. What do think people would miss if there was no South Carolina to speak of?
