Washington isn’t a dangerous place to live, but like any state, we still have our fair share of crimes – especially in the big cities. Thankfully, we have people out there who serve to protect us, like the real-life Seattle superhero, Phoenix Jones. He’s trained as a professional MMA fighter, and he patrols the streets regularly to help keep our state’s largest city safe and sound.

Amber Case / Flickr This vigilante superhero has actually been protecting Seattle for years. He may not possess superpowers, but he does have a background as a professional fighter, so you know he’s well-equipped to fight crime. Phoenix used to lead a group of heroes known as the Rain City Superhero Movement, but they ended up disbanding in the last few years. Even though he hasn’t been in the news as much lately, he’s still been out actively patrolling to keep the city safe after dark.

Mike Lorden / Flickr Phoenix has prevented countless crimes, but the most notable is a recent incident in which he stopped an attempted murder. Last year in Capitol Hill, Phoenix was out patrolling the streets when all of a sudden he witnessed three men viciously attacking someone, beating and pistol-whipping them. Our local superhero sprang into action right away, chased the men down and knocked the weapon straight out of their hands.

Ed Peterson / Flickr For a long time, the superhero’s identity wasn’t actually publicly known. After he was ironically arrested for use of pepper spray, Phoenix was faced with the threat of being revealed, so he decided to just take off the mask on his own and introduce himself.

Pat Loika / Flickr His real name’s Ben Fodor, and he’s actually a professional MMA fighter, signed to World Series of Fighting. He developed this epic, bullet-proof super suit to help distinguish himself from criminals by the police, and to keep himself protected.

Facebook / Phoenix Jones ESPN SportsCenter even produced this cinematic, 10-minute documentary profiling Seattle’s own superhero. It includes footage of Phoenix Jones patrolling the streets, fighting crime, his background as an MMA fighter, actual news clips, comic book animations and interviews with the Seattle Police Department. If you have extra time, this short film’s totally worth checking out:
