Kentucky winters do not appeal to everyone, but to those who love the chill of the air, they are perfect. The snow and ice glisten in the sun and the moonlight. Jack Frost may be nipping at our nose, but he does make things a beautiful spectacle during the process. Many members of my own family love the winter season. It is one of the many reasons they chose Kentucky for a homestead.
Here are 13 reasons why you shouldn’t dread our winter:
- Diamond Cave
Terry Hoffman A cave system will mostly remain the same temperature year-round. That makes it one of those activities you can do regardless of season. The stalactites and stalagmites of Diamond Cave in Park City are quite a sight to behold and enjoy with friends and family.
- Elk tours
Dan Crank From January to March, the Jenny Wiley State Park and the Buckhorn State Park both give Elk tours. These majestic creatures graze and carry on in the beauty of the parks while visitors snap photos and make memories.
- Annoying bugs disappear
w. marsh During our beautiful winters we do not see mosquitoes, gnats, or any other truly annoying insect. They all just seem to vanish–which is something that will receive no complaints from us.
- City light ups
Laserbub Most larger cities and some small towns have a light up celebration. This usually entails beautiful light arrangements, music, vendors, food and delicious warm drinks from cocoa and coffee, to hot buttered rum. This happens in Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Bardstown and other cities across the state.
- Frost
USDA The frost may take down our plants on the farm, but seeing the vivid green grass with a thin white frost can actually be quite beautiful.
- Frozen trees
w. marsh There are those times when a thin layer of ice coats the branches of our plentiful forests. When this happens, the branches often look as if they are made of glass.
- Ice skating
Michael Taggert Some areas open ice rinks during the winter months. If you have the balance, (or the patience,) ice skating can be a real blast. Some people get really good, others spend a lot of time on their tush.
- Lights Under Louisville
:aserbub The Megacavern offers a festive holiday drive through show each winter season. Pay a fee and take your car load of companions on a ride through a winter wonderland, including lights and moving displays, all set to holiday music.
- Warm drinks
Mike Winter is the perfect time to drink mulled cider, hot cocoa, unique coffees and other warm drinks. There is nothing like walking in after a long day at work and having a nice warm cup of whichever you prefer. We have a fondness for mulled cider with cinnamon, apple slices, lemons, oranges and lime. It is delicious.
- Sledding
Metro Parks Depending on your area you might get enough snow to go sledding. That can be a lot of fun regardless of age, and the Kentucky hills are just made for it.
- Sleep
Julia Popp Winter is a time for rest in the woodlands. Many forest beings store up for the winter and don’t go out as much. Some people do the same thing. (Or, at least we try to.)
- Kentucky scenery
Julia Popp Everywhere you look in Kentucky, you see nature’s blessings. Winter gives us a new perspective on our gorgeous state, not to mention, it brings on the onset of spring. Winter is nature’s way of composting and letting life burst anew in late March.
- Snow
Land Between the Lakes Kentucky may not get as much snow as other places, but when it does it makes the ground and everything it touches quite beautiful. The tiny white crystals cover the rolling hills, forests and towns in a gorgeous white blanket that sometimes resembles marshmallow fluff.
No matter where you are in Kentucky during the winter months, there will be some beauty nearby. If you are in a big city, then usually a park offers a beautiful view. Even the city can be pretty blanketed with snow. It just gives us all a different perspective. What are your favorite things about Kentucky winters?
