If you’ve made the trek up to the summit of Sassafras Mountain then you already know the mountain has the height to take you above the world. But did you know that view is about to get a little higher in the coming months? The state’s newest and most elaborate mountaintop observation tower is scheduled for construction beginning in Spring 2017. When completed, the tower will dish up 360-degree panoramic views of three states.
Yelp/Natalie P Sassafras Mountain, elevation 3,553-feet, is the highest point in the Palmetto State, although the north side of the mountain is shared with neighboring North Carolina. The current observation tower only affords a 120-degree view but it’s spectacular! Imagine what adding some height will do for the view from this peak. The highest mountain in South Carolina is getting a facelift in the spring of 2017, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Yelp/Ryan K The best part of the facelift in 2017? Accessing the top of the mountain and the top of the new observation tower will be handicap-accessible. Even now, the best part of visiting Sassafras Mountain is that you can drive to within 300 feet of the top, but it’s difficult for a wheelchair to make it to the summit.

Yelp/Ryan K It’s a relatively easy trek for most.

Yelp/Natalie P Here’s a view of North Carolina from the current deck, which will remain in place after the new one is open. On the new deck, you’ll be able to get a 360-degree panoramic view that includes three states: South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Some speculate that on a clear day you’ll also see Tennessee.
Yelp/Ryan K Construction on the new observation deck is set to begin around April 2017. But why wait when you can visit now?
Google Maps Sassafras Mountain is about 20 miles north of Pickens, The top of the mountain is most easily accessed by vehicle from the F. Van Clayton Highway which originates from Hwy 178 in Sunset, South Carolina.
