With Christmas just a few short days away, gift giving is a thought on everyone’s minds. But where in our beloved state do the most generous people reside? We set out to discover which towns in Pennsylvania are the most generous and giving.
We looked to Philanthropy.com, which breaks down the amount of charitable donations for each area in the country. The giving data ranks areas based on giving ratio, the ratio of an area’s total charitable donations to its total gross adjusted income for that year. Check out the rankings for Pennsylvania below.
- Pittsburgh
Wikimedia Commons Though it is the tenth most generous town on our list, Pittsburgh is still a pretty charitable city, with a giving ratio of 2.46%. In 2012, residents made just over $1 billion in charitable donations.
- Philadelphia
Wikimedia Commons The biggest city in Pennsylvania is one of its most charitable, with a total giving ratio of 2.59%. That’s nothing to laugh at.
- York
Wikimedia Commons York’s giving ratio is 2.63%. The median contribution in 2012 for each resident was $2,677.
- Harrisburg
Wikimedia Commons The Pennsylvania state capitol is one of the most giving cities in the state, with a giving ratio of 2.53%. Residents in Harrisburg donated almost $28 million to charities in 2012.
- Sharon
Jon Dawson/ Flickr Sharon, Pennsylvania is part of the same metropolitan statistical area as Youngstown, Warren, and Boardman in Ohio; this metropolitan area has a giving ratio of 2.79%, bringing Sharon to number six on our list of the most generous towns in Pennsylvania.
- Altoona

- Williamsport

- State College

- Lebanon

- Lancaster
“Nino” Eugine La Pia/ Flickr The Lancaster Metropolitan area is the most generous place in Pennsylvania. Way to go, Lancaster! The giving ratio here is highest by a long shot, at 4.14%. The total contributions from this area were more than $366 million.
