Some truly strange things have happened in Pennsylvania this week– from a city spending amazing money to get rid of a common pest to a woman swiping an unbelievable amount of merchandise from a lingerie store. Here is our roundup of wacky events.
- Scranton-area man becomes an arm wrestling champion.
KAZ Vorpal/ Flickr Storm Chellino has enjoyed arm wrestling since his high school days, but never expected to become a champion of the sport. He is the youngest participant to have won numerous arm wrestling titles and is one of the few competitors on the forefront of the World Armwrestling League.
- Allegheny County spends $12,000 to eradicate single bed bug.
AFPMB/ Flickr How much do you hate bugs? $12,000 worth of hate? Apparently that’s how much one 911 emergency dispatch center in Pittsburgh is willing to spend to make sure that one bedbug doesn’t turn into… more than one bedbug.
- Bucks County woman shoplifts 86 bras from local Victoria Secret.
Lucero Design/ Flickr The Victoria Secret in the Oxford Valley Mall is a few bras short after realizing that a customer stole 86 of them, at a value of over $4,000. The thief has yet to be caught.
- Black bear crashes through retired Pittsburgh teacher’s windshield.
Marie Hale/ Flickr Have you ever seen that scene in the movie Tommy Boy where the deer destroys the interior of the main characters’ car? That’s kind of what happened here. A bear broke into Ellen Stolpe’s car and utterly ravaged the vehicle from the inside out. The retired schoolteacher could do nothing but laugh in response.
- Animal Control rescues 122 cats from Pennsylvania residence.
Lee Martin/ Flickr The owners of this Philadelphia home aspired to open a cat sanctuary, but things got out of hand before they could get the chance. Most of the rescued felines were kittens and will be made available for adoption after some medical attention.
- Somerset man goes to trial for setting up a fake DUI checkpoint.
djfrantic/ Flickr Why? No one is quite sure. 19 year-old Logan Shaulis is in serious trouble for drunk driving and impersonating a state trooper and actually stopping a driver. Maybe he thought the best way to avoid a DUI was to take preventative measures.
- Central PA woman drunkenly sets dummy on fire.
markus spiske/ Flickr A woman is facing charges of public drunkenness and arson for setting a training dummy on fire at a Portage bar. That girl is on fire!
- Silence of the Lambs house goes up for sale.
Photo Credit You’ve probably seen the 1991 classic, Silence of the Lambs. The house where much of the film’s action takes place– Buffalo Bill’s house– is up for sale for $300,000. It’s located in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, and I’m sorry to inform you that it does not actually have a giant pit in the basement.
