You’ve definitely heard just how creepy Kansas can be, I’m sure of it. We’ve got plenty of “haunted” places to prove that. However, there’s one small town that is just so filled with creepy happenings that we can’t ignore it. Positively bursting with paranormal activity, the darkest spot on the map has to be Atchison. They even have a haunted homes tour on their trolley ride! Let’s check it out:
The Riverview Drive home is a good spot to start here. Stories say the house is impossible to live in due to paranormal activity. Guests will find their things thrown around, televisions have been found on high volume in rooms where no one has been, and all sorts of sights of a ghostly elderly woman have happened here. The attic is where it’s at!

Atchison street was previously known as ferry street way back when. It’s said to be haunted by a woman whose horses came off her buggy, and she was plunged into the cold waters of the river below, trapped inside. Her body was never recovered, but men report hearing a woman’s voice calling them from the waters.

Nellie Trueblood was an elderly schoolteacher who died in her home, alone. Those who tried to fix up the place and move in were met with glowing balls of light, which scare away any work crews hired here.

According to previous owners, the paranormal entity here is a friendly one. On one occasion, a man who lived here was helped into a jacket by who he thought was his wife, but when he turned to thank her, no one was there. Another story tells of tea being prepared when they got home from an outing, with a full kettle hissing on the stove. What a helpful spirit, eh?

Benedictine College was once a nunnery, and though nuns can be creepy, this place isn’t a bad one to hang out at. The story is, monks from the college just want to keep mischief out of its halls.

Molly’s Hollow is my favorite story of the bunch, by far. Locals can’t decide if she was a woman who was hung by her date after prom, or an African American woman who was lynched here. Many have seen ghostly figures and camera inconsistencies at this tree on the right, where she’s said to have swung many years ago. Whoever she is, it’s a creepy story, but that doesn’t keep the local teens from hanging out here.

This is a building in Jackson Park where you might also find a ghost like Molly hanging about. There are many reports of weeping and moaning heard here, which doesn’t make me want to check it out too much!

Usually referred to as the Waggener house or the Gargoyle house, this one is said to be haunted by the man who built it. He allegedly made his fortune through deals with the devil, and the last man to try and remove the gargoyles fell to his death down the stairs. How terrible!

Then there’s the Sallie House, which has been featured on shows like Sightings, Unexplained Mysteries, and Haunted Heartland. The Sallie House is said to be haunted by a six-year old girl named Sallie who died during procedures to remove an appendix, where she was awake during the process. In 1993, a couple was renting the home when they were assailed with paintings being turned around, their child’s toys being thrown about, and electrical appliances turning on and off as if on their own. There were a number of small fires that started randomly, and after the husband was shoved by a ghostly hand towards the stairs, they left.
