New York is well known for turning into an absolute winter wonderland during this time of year. We already pointed you in the right direction when it comes to exploring our most beautiful frozen waterfalls during this season, but there’s one state park you might want to make a point to keep your eye on!
One of our more popular parks to visit, Letchworth State Park is unique to see during its off season.

While there’s nothing like seeing Letchworth’s three main waterfalls frozen over, there’s one area in the park that takes on a new form once temperatures start to drop.

Located just outside of the Glen Iris Inn, there’s a pond featuring a gravity fountain that’s been known to turn into an epic Ice Volcano.
Larry Neuberger/Flickr The gravity fountain never shuts off, so once the temperatures get cold enough, this thing has the power to quickly grow! Even at its tallest, you’ll still be able to see water spouting out of the top of the volcano.
Several years ago the ice volcano gained national attention, drawing more and more visitors to the park.
darosenbauer/Flickr Locals know that this unbelievable Ice Volcano has been forming inside of the park for years, with the fountain being made back in 1860. But it wasn’t until the winter of 2014 that the incredible size of this natural wonder earned the park national attention. With news outlets all over the country talking about the enormous cone of ice, the park began to see more and more visitors coming to check it out.
Right in the heart of this state park, this year the volcano has yet to reach towering heights but in the past has been over 5-stories tall.
Letchworth State Park/Facebook So far this year the size of the ice volcano has varied, with it remaining on the smaller side of the scale. Earlier this month guests saw the volcano begin to form, while in in more recent days the pond has melted and hasn’t been frozen over.
We’re already dreaming of summer, but can’t help hoping that things get cold enough before the winter’s over to give us another epic ice volcano!
