New Mexico owns green chile cheeseburgers. We have an official state Green Chile CheeseburgerTrial. Plus, there is even legislation pending to make the GCCB an official state thing! But one little burger joint, tucked away few blocks from Old Town, in Albuquerque, has claimed their share of the New Mexico burger market by topping their burgers with RED!

When you start talking about green chile cheeseburgers, there is always some joker who asks if there are red chile cheeseburgers.

Kimesha M./Yelp Well, the answer is, yes. Yes, Virginia, there are red chile cheeseburgers. The Little Red Hamburger Hut, in Albuquerque, has been serving them (successfully) for more than a decade.

Inside is a quirky mix of adobe meets 50s and 60s fast-food kitch.

Michael M./ Yelp The walls are thick and the old wood floor creaks when you walk to the side room to place your order. As you wait in one of the old-style burger joint booths for your food, you can take in the mishmash of posters and pictures on the wall. If you’re into dining al fresco, take a seat on the porch. Burgers are cooked to order, but they won’t take long.

The menu is short and built around burgers.

TG/Yelp “Little Reds” are the star of the show. The signature red chile cheeseburgers are hand-patted from fresh ground beef, then flattened and seared. The cheese is American. The chile is rich and red. The chile doesn’t overshadow the beef, nor does its flavor get lost in the white bread bun.

Taco burgers and tortilla burgers also make the menu.

Chris D./Yelp If you don’t want a burger, you can get hot dogs and foot-longs there too. As a bonus for those who have a hard time with choices, they have added a “burger dog” too. Don’t think about it too hard. It’s just what the name implies.

The Little Red staples have a cult following.

Talia M./Yelp Dressed with the same melty American, lettuce, and onions as the regular burgers, the crunchy taco burgers can be a magical break from a burger and bun. And the fries? Cover them with cheese and soak them in red. Then, there are the Little Reds.

Of course, you can get a green chile cheeseburger too.

Shannon M./Yelp It just wouldn’t be a New Mexican burger place without a green chile cheeseburger. No matter which color you choose, chile and cheese are included in the price.

Order anything. They promise it’s going to be good.

Talia M./Yelp At lunch, there may be a line, but it moves swiftly. The counter staff is practiced and professional, both at entering orders and fielding questions from newbie diners. With every order, you get their promise, “satisfaction guaranteed.”

The Little Red Burger Hut is tucked away, but not far from the action.

Josh C./Yelp If you’re in Old Town Albuquerque or visiting the museums on Mountain Road, the Little Red Hamburger Hut is just a few blocks away. Find it at 1501 Mountain Road, NW.
