South Carolina is home to some amazing cities and towns. Let’s just throw modesty to the wind right now and admit it: they’re all pretty spectacular.

That being said – it’s nice, isn’t it, when one of our South Carolina towns earns some national attention for something positive? Like being The No. 1 City In America.

Flickr/Savannah Sam Photography & Coastal Art Charleston is sorta like that girl in homeroom that was naturally beautiful and seemingly didn’t have to even work at it. Yet everyone loved her. Am I right?

Flickr/John Piercy Charleston’s charm and modest decadence seem to flow so easily, like the Cooper and Ashley Rivers as they meander toward their inevitable meeting in the Charleston Harbor.

Flickr/monica.orchard The Holy City has captivated all of North America for years. In July of 2015, Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards named her The Number One City In North America. It was the 5th year in a row that Charleston earned the top spot. The publication cited Charleston’s “beautiful gardens” …

Flickr/Barry Peters … the “vibrantly painted Georgian houses along Rainbow Row” …

Circa 1886 … and the city’s “food scene” among the things that most captivated their readers. (In case you’re wondering, it’s rainbow trout with crab, pecan dirty rice, Brussels sprouts, pancetta, and grapefruit beurre blanc from Circa 1886 Restaurant.)

Flickr/Scott Oves As with that girl in homeroom that made “being wonderful” look so easy, Charleston also scooped up the No. 2 position on the 2015 Travel & Leisure list of “Best Cities in the World to Visit.”

Flickr/Josh Morss And why wouldn’t people want to visit? Charleston, too, makes it look easy to be wonderful. With so many acutely preserved historic buildings …

Flickr/Ewen Roberts … and plantations …

Flickr/ Mikel Manitius … Charleston unwittingly flirts with the rest of the world - yes, the world - who can’t resist the welcoming charm of this true Southern belle.

And so, where ever this article finds you – whether in the Palmetto State or not – how about a slight tip of your chin for the Holy City, signaling a quiet thumbs up to the No 1 City in America – right here (at home) in South Carolina.
