Nevada’s small towns are charming all year long but in the winter they somehow become even more picturesque. One town in particular that turns into a photographer’s dream is Genoa, with its deep historic heritage as the oldest town in the state.

The residents of Genoa love the winter holidays. Businesses and government offices are decked out with Christmas lights all around the town.

Genoa is situated just at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The town’s proximity to the mountains provides some beautiful scenic winter tableaux.

The town in winter receives regular snow and icy conditions. If you plan to visit, make sure your car has chains to handle the roads in case of weather!

Christmastime is a big celebration in Genoa. The town hosts several activities for locals and visitors alike.

The town’s “Welcome to Genoa” sign is the place for the “Hope Falcke Tree” each year. The town gathers for the lighting of the tree and sing carols along the Main street of town.

A “Breakfast with Santa” is held at the town hall. Attendees enjoy a full pancake breakfast with a visit from Santa Claus.

The town also hosts an annual Christmas with the Cowboys concert.

Reno Tahoe/Flickr At night, you can visit the Genoa Bar and Saloon, Nevada’s “Oldest Thirst Parlor.” The bar has a rich history with many famous patrons including Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant and Clark Gable.

The statue of Jon “Snowshoe” Thompson looks perfect with the snowy accents. After all, he did invent snowshoes!

Along with all the holiday celebrations, you can visit all of the historical areas of Genoa in the winter.

Part of Genoa’s charm is its closeness to the natural beauty of the Sierras. It’s not uncommon at any time of year for deer to drop in for a visit.

Visitors can also partake in some amazing winter hiking.

You’ll be transfixed by strolling through the snow-dusted Jeffery and white fir trees. You can also enjoy hiking and other winter sports activities at nearby Lake Tahoe (about 25 minutes from Genoa).
