As you may have heard, the extramarital affair website, Ashley Madison, has been hacked. User information has been leaked to the public and hundreds of disloyal spouses throughout the country have been caught with their pants down.
Data scientist Jake Popham has analyzed the released data to determine which states in the United States are most likely to cheat. He ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia by how much each spent on Ashley Madison per capita. Below are the rankings:
West Virginia
Mississippi
Idaho
Maine
South Dakota
Iowa
Kentucky
New Mexico
Montana
Louisiana
Oregon

North Dakota

Alaska
Tennessee
Nebraska

Wyoming
Kansas
Hawaii
Arizona
Nevada

Minnesota
Georgia
Delaware
Utah
Texas
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
Washington
California
Illinois
Maryland
Virginia
teakwood/ Flickr Virginia is the tenth most likely state to cheat in the country, followed closely by Maryland, California, Illinois, and Washington.
- New Hampshire
bark/ Flickr Ashley Madison users in New Hampshire spent just over $3 per capita on the website.
- New York
michael 7601/ Flickr New Yorkers are slightly more likely to cheat than spouses in New Hampshire.
- Massachusetts
brett jordan/ Flickr Usage of Ashley Madison leaps from New York to Massachusetts, with the New England state spending just over $3.5 per capita on the website.
- Arkansas
Harsh Agrawal/ Flickr Arkansas trails behind Connecticut by just a hair.
- Connecticut
Harsh Agrawal/ Flickr Ashley Madison users in Connecticut spent about $3.6 per capita on the extramarital affair website.
- New Jersey
know nunsense/ Flickr It appears that many states in the Northeast lead the nation in cheating, including New Jersey among Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
- Washington, D.C.
Public Domain Washington, D.C.’s elevated position within this list makes sense considering that many Ashley Madison users were found to be government employees.
- Colorado
Katie Tegtmeyer/ Flickr Colorado users spent about $4.5 per capita on the site Ashley Madison. It is the state second most likely to cheat, though read on to find out why it might actually be the first.
- Alabama
SilverK99/ DeviantArt Jake Popham notes that the gargantuan lead Alabama has on all of the other states (over a full dollar per capita more spent on Ashley Madison) may be due to its position as the default state in the drop-down menu when users sign up for the site. In that case, it may be better to look at Colorado as the state most likely to cheat.
