It’s always fun to take a trip down memory lane or explore the past through stories and images. Whether you’re reliving your childhood or taking in a time before you were born, old photos are a piece of history worth treasuring. These photos will take you back, some a few decades and others, much longer.
- Traymore Hotel, Atlantic City
Wikimedia/Cubantoro The Traymore hotel got its start as a 10 room boarding house in 1879. By 1906 it was expanded into a full service hotel. Very popular until the 1960’s, it was abandoned by the 70’s. This photo was taken circa 1930.
- Madison Lackawanna Train Station, Madison
Wikimedia/Monopoly31121993 This Madison train station had several incarnations. Built in 1838, it was rebuilt in 1879 and 1916. This photo is circa 1910.
- Neptune Fire Truck
Wikimedia/Consultlink This 1967 fire truck was in service until 2006 when it was sold by the city of Neptune to a private buyer in Portugal who allows for visitation by appointment.

- The derailment of engine 751
Flickr/Richard Taken by train engineer George Birdsall sometime in the 1940’s, there do not appear to be any casualties. My research indicates that there were no fatal train accidents in New Jersey throughout the decade. However one of the largest train disasters in history occurred just years later. A train in Woodbridge, NJ, derailed in 1951 killing 85 people.
