Illinois might not have mountains, but there are plenty of places to get some awesome views. These are the views that might make your palms sweat.
- Starved Rock
Lotzman Katzman/Flickr Whether it’s from overlooks or just while you’re looking down into the canyons below, Starved Rock has some pretty terrifying views. And you do need to be careful, as people unfortunately have fallen here. One of the best views the park offers is from Lovers Leap Overlook.
- Garden of the Gods
christina rutz/Flickr Garden of the Gods will offer you some of the most outrageous views of Illinois. These 320 million year old bluffs are made out of sandstone. Your view comes courtesy of these 100 foot tall magnificent bluffs.
- LaRue-Pine Hills
Curtis Abert/Flickr LaRue Pine Hills has been called one of the most stunning views in all of Illinois. In fact, this particular spot is referred to as “Inspiration Point.” You will surely be inspired by 150 foot limestone bluffs.
- Mississippi Palisades State Park
CinCool/Flickr This 2500 acre state park offers some fantastic views of the Mississippi, and those views are even more fantastic if you decide to go rock climbing. You can climb at Sentinel Area, Twin Sisters and Indian Head.
- Alpine Slide, Galena
Richie Diesterheft/Flickr Riding around in a trolley is lovely, but why not experience Galena the way you were supposed to: on a slide. Alpine Slide gives you 2,050 feet to slide down as you take in these awesome views of the Mississippi. If you can handle it, that is.
- Willis Tower
Tony Brooks/Flickr You can almost get vertigo simply craning your neck up. But take it up a level by taking the elevator to the top of the Willis Tower. You might not know that, if you’re brave enough, you can step out onto glass and see the street below you. You might just freak out.
- Hanover Bluff
Justin Meissen/Flickr Hanover Bluff is located in Jo Daviess County. It is very steep, and even walking can be difficult. THere is a 16 acre lake that you can walk out over. There are 450 acres for you to explore.
- Matthiessen State Park
Logan Ward/Flickr Matthiessen State Park has also sorts of views that might make you sweat a little bit. Views looking down on the canyon below can be pretty intense. You can get some pretty awesome views from the lower dells looking up, too.
