Let’s face it, there are certain things that people really need when they live in Alaska. I’m not saying you need these things to survive, but you may need at least some of these things to maintain your sanity.

  1. Crosswalk count down.

Bossi | Flickr The crosswalk counter is a great resource for Alaskan drivers, not just pedestrians. When you’re cruising 35 and see that counter approaching 0, you know it’s time to apply the brakes regardless if the light is yellow or not. It helps that the yellow lights are longer in Alaska, but the crosswalk counter is a great indicator as to when those lights are going to change.

  1. Espresso.

Anders Fredenslund | Flickr Who cares what day of the week it is, who cares what time it is, for some reason espresso is a huge necessity for most Alaskans. Maybe it’s the long, dark, chilly winters?

  1. A snow shovel.

Melissa Gutierrez | Flickr Whether you live in the bush or in town, we all need one of these. The handy dandy snow shovel.

  1. Down… everything.

Maria Ly | Flickr You’ll need a down jacket, a down vest, down slippers, down pants, down skirt. The list goes on and on but, baby, you’ll be warm.

  1. A companion.

Mark Robinson | Flickr In Alaska it’s nice to have a companion, whether that’s a dog to take to the dog park during those long winter months or a cat to curl up on the couch with you at home!

  1. Decent snow tires.

Mara 1 | Flickr In Alaska, you absolutely must have some decent tires with traction for those icy months. Don’t forget to take those studs off though when the time comes, we can all hear you from a mile away!

  1. A tent!

Drew Brayshaw | Flickr Maybe not everyone in Alaska, but most people couldn’t live without their beloved tent!

  1. A sleeping bag, too.

David Dufresne | Flickr Speaking of tents, a lot of Alaskans couldn’t live without their sleeping bags either. Not even this little cutie patootie would dream of not having her down bag with her.

  1. Ice scraper… or credit card!

Endlisnis | Flickr You will need SOMETHING to scrape all that ice off your darn vehicle.

  1. A warm vacation.

Shawn Harquail | Flickr Let’s face it, every Alaskan needs a warm vacation every now and then. We all need to squish sand between our toes instead of snow.

  1. Broom ball!

anthony_goto | Flickr It’s hard for Alaskans to live without the beloved game of broom ball! Maybe it’s for the younger generations, but still it’s pretty darn popular.

  1. The xtratuf!

mcav0y | Flickr An Alaskan simply cannot live without their Xtra Tuffs!

Can you imagine living without these things? What else can’t Alaskans live without? Let me know in the comments.
