There is nothing quite like Georgia pride. In fact, Georgians have quite a lot of it. Residents of the state like to revel in their accomplishments and celebrate them happily—and with good reason. There is an incredible amount of reasons Georgians should be celebrating, and bragging for that matter. Next time you find yourself in a Georgia-pride pickle, here are a few of things you can brag about…
- We survived the Great Blizzard of ‘93.
Flickr Rodney Campbell Anybody that lived in Georgia through the Great Blizzard of 1993 absolutely has something to brag about.
- You’re welcome for Julia Roberts.
WikiCommons David Shankbone It’s true. Georgian’s are very proud to have America’s Sweetheart Julia Roberts straight from Smyrna, Georgia. Roberts lived in Smyrna, where she attended Fitzhugh Lee Elementary School and Griffin Middle School.
- We’re at the Center of the World.
Flickr Kevin Gill If you’re ever traveling down U.S. Highway 29, keep an eye out for a rusty historical marker 3 miles south of Hartwell. The sign reads “CENTER OF THE WORLD”. According to the Cherokee Indians, this was the site for all their tribal councils and trade.
- You’re also welcome for Alan Jackson.
Flickr Joe Bielawa This country star is a beloved human for a majority of Georgians. He was born on October 17, 1958 in Newnan, Georgia.
- We have the world’s largest college campus.
Flickr Bryon Lippincott Berry College in Rome, Georgia is on the world’s largest educational campus—with more than 28,000 acres. Brains and beauty…isn’t that something worth bragging about?
- You’re also welcome for Coca Cola.
Flickr David Schexnaydre The most popular pop beverage in the United States was first created right here in the Peach State. Just imagine a world without this fizzy, sweet drink.
- Our Georgia Music Hall of Fame is Out-Of-This-World
Flickr TimothyJ Where else can you get such a heavy dose of some of the rock and blues Gods and Goddesses of the world?
- Gone With the Wind…enough said.
Flickr Kevin Dooley Georgians love Gone With the Wind. In fact, Clayton County, Georgia is the Official Home of Gone With the Wind thanks to Author Margaret Mitchell, who used it as the setting in her novel.
- The Girl Scouts were founded here.
Flickr C.C. Chapman You would not be eating those delicious Samoas if we didn’t have Juliette Gordon Low found Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912 in Savannah.
- You can either begin or end at the Appalachian Trail in Georgia.
Flickr Courtney McGough Depending which way you begin….or end your journey, that is.
- Our peaches and nectarines are THAT good…
Flickr Roger Jones Did you know that we are a TOP producer of peaches in the country?
- But then again, so are our blueberries….
Flickr Sandra We are one of the top producers of those, too!
- But have you had Georgia fried chicken?!
Flickr jeffreyw Some people can never quite find fried chicken anywhere else in the country, the way they had it prepared in Georgia.
- Stone Mountain….
Flickr Greg Williams Ahh, the beautiful Stone Mountain near Atlanta is one of the largest single masses of exposed granite in the world. THE WORLD. How’s that for impressive?
- You know what else we have the largest of? Drive-In restaurants…
Flickr Richard Cawood The Varsity in Atlanta is the largest drive-in in the world and can fit up to 600 vehicles.
Now’s your chance, Georgians! What else are you proud about? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
