Firstly, let’s just say there are several Palmetto State gas and filling stations that have been converted into eateries. Tubbs in Florence and Harolds in Yemassee are only a couple of them, but there are so many more. Charleston’s trending upcity area has at least three of these ex gas stations that have transformed into amazing places to grab an exceptional meal. Here’s one of them.

Trip Advisor/GOBEAVS96 For real: Xaio Bao Biscuit is gas station pan Asian gourmet. The trendy exterior adequately preserves the history of the location, keeping the awning that sat here on Rutledge overgrown with weeds and “stuff” for decades. It’s all cleaned up now and is a delightful space to sit outside at XBB.

Trip Advisor/journeysabound From the moment we arrived at Xaio Bao Biscuit I was immediately immersed in the ambience of this old filling station. Maybe it’s because my father used to own one very similar. But nostalgia, in whatever package, is a key factor in generating good experiences. We were off to a great start.

© Robin Jarvis We grabbed a big group table all the way in the far left corner. The location was perfect for absorbing all the visual candy the space has to offer. It was interesting to see how much of the interior appeared to be original and not covered up. From the exposed brick walls, structural beams, wooden slat ceiling and the concrete floor, it felt original and without pretense.

Trip Advisor/stevewM1993OK The menu is authentic pan-Asian, with noodle dishes, salads - including my fave: papaya salad. We even found a soft shell crab dish!

Yelp/Jefferson S. (Papaya Salad)

Yelp/Mindy K (Soft Shell Crab)

Yelp/Leah P. Everything was delicious. I’m no food critic, but I am a life critic. Aren’t we all? Without a doubt, Xaio Bao Biscuit in Charleston is one of those experiences you must have before you die.

Yelp/Curtis S.

Yelp/Karen S.

Yelp/Olivia N. If you get there and have to wait for a table, no worries. There’s a bar.

Yelp/CB R.

Yelp/Anna G Without making a ton of changes to the building XBB created a space that actually feels like you’re sitting in a 1950s filling station, albeit minus the oil cans and the grease.
