South Carolina has a number of quiet underrated small towns that have lots to do and are worthy of a visit. One such town is centrally located enough for it to be the perfect distance for a day trip. It’s the Town of Elloree in Orangeburg County.

This tiny town of only 680 people has the state’s only teapot museum, a fantastic town heritage museum, unique gift stores, some wonderful restaurants and yes…only one intersection that demands the traffic taming skills of a stoplight.

Yelp/Michael T The area now known as “Elloree” was first settled in the 1870s. The town was the vision of one man, William J. Snider who opened a mercantile store here. And the rest is history.

Yelp/Michael T Snider’s Store, located next door to the Elloree Heritage Museum on one of the town’s major streets is named for the town’s founder.

Facebook/Elloree Heritage Museum You’ll find unique gifts, jams and other great finds at Snider’s. And just up the street are even more wonderful stores. Elloree’s downtown offers much in the way of things to do, in spite of this being such a small town.

TripAdvisor/Richard E No visit to Elloree would be complete without a visit to J’s Tearific Teapot Museum. The unique teapot entrance to the museum is located right behind Cleveland Street.

TripAdvisor/Richard E You’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the teapots on display at this special attraction in Elloree. If you have trouble finding it, then here’s a link to the Google Map location.

Google Maps [streetview] In 1999 the Town of Elloree revitalized the downtown area, creating brick-lined paths and sidewalks improving the overall appearance, specifically Cleveland Street. Indeed, the streets have come a long way in Elloree. When this town got its start in the 1870s, the streets were dirt and the sidewalks were wooden, like a town you’d see in a western movie.

Google Maps [streetview] Even the funeral homes (see above photo) are so beautiful folks can look ahead and find peace knowing their loved ones will last see them in such a peaceful and serene setting.

Google Maps [streetview] We love how the Google Streetview vehicle captured this playful dog, obviously not a stray, on the front lawn of the post office. Not many towns have a post office with a front lawn, not to mention a neighbor dog running playfully on that lawn!

Google Maps [streetview] If you get hungry on your visit to Elloree, the town can take care of you there, too. Mom’s Kitchen is open on Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

TripAdvisor/Terrie J And the Cleveland Street Café is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
