In this spirit, we find Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Garden. While this area is relatively unknown, it’s an important part of the Lexington community. The garden is equally charming and informative. Here’s a glimpse of the magical experience in store for visitors of all ages.

Boxerwood Nature Center & Woodland Garden/Facebook It all began with an overgrown pasture on the outskirts of Lexington. This was the chosen spot for a young couple to build their home in 1952. Dr. Munger began planting trees to provide shade for the house, which sparked an interest in landscaping and gardening. This developed into a greater passion for the wellbeing of these plants, and Dr. Munger believed in letting them grow freely with minimal human interaction.

Boxerwood Nature Center & Woodland Garden/Facebook After 30 years of collecting various plants and raising a family, Dr. Munger had planted nearly 13,000 trees and shrubs. Although he passed away in 1988, his legacy continues to thrive in the beautiful Boxerwood Gardens of today.

Although much care and attention has gone into the development of the grounds, most of the work has been done by nature.

Boxerwood Nature Center & Woodland Garden/Facebook Boxerwood has a core educational mission, which is stated as follows: “to help people of all ages connect with and care for the natural world.” Boxerwood partners with schools in the greater Rockbridge County area and brings nearly 2,000 students to the garden each year. For adults, there are programs, tours, training, and other educational programs offered.

Boxerwood Photographed above is the beloved Play Trail, where little ones can experience nature in its most playful and delightful form. Some of the activities along the trail include baking clay and mud cookies, digging to China, and climbing into tree houses.
