Happiness can be considered a subjective term, but there are definitely some things that can contribute to overall contentment in people’s lives. Career experts at Zippia took some of those factors and compared them among cities in North Dakota to determine which cities were considered the happiest places to live in the state. Do you think your city is on the list? Read to find out!

  1. Wahpeton

Andrew Filer/Flickr To start off, just making the list at tenth is Wahpeton. Among the 7,804 residents, over half of them own their home instead of rent or otherwise, and almost half of them are happily married. The cost of living in Wahpeton is relatively low and most residents have a stable job.

  1. Minot

Andrew Filer/Flickr Next on the rank is Minot. It’s one of North Dakota’s biggest cities with almost 45,000 residents. The average commute time is only 14 minutes, leaving people less frustrated when getting to and from their job, which they likely have as the unemployment rate is only 2.7% in Minot.

  1. Devils Lake

Andrew Filer/Flickr The 7,218 people who live in Devils Lake seem to be having a pretty good time as they rank eighth on the list. Other than close by lake access, they get to enjoy a commute time of less than ten minutes, 42% of them are married, and the cost of living is relatively low.

  1. Jamestown

Jasperdo/Flickr Seventh place goes to Jamestown and their 15,333 content residents. 56.6% of them own their own home in partial thanks to an unemployment of only 2.6%.

  1. Williston

Andrew Filer/Flickr Not surprising, the unemployment rate in Williston is virtually nonexistent at less than 1%. The commute time might be a little higher compared to other places, rating at on average over 13 minutes, but when you think about huge cities in other states where the time it takes to get 10 miles down the road can be over an hour, it seems like smooth sailing and very lacking of the frustration associated with being stuck in traffic. To go with that statistic, Williston also has a lot of amenities and almost 53% of the population are married.

  1. Mandan

Andrew Filer/Flickr Coming in at fifth on the list is Mandan. They have the highest amount of residents owning their home - at almost 70% - out of all the other cities on this list. With 18,365 residents, you get the bigger city feel without much congestion, but all the amenities you need.

  1. Bismarck

Andrew Filer/Flickr Fourth place goes to Mandan’s neighbor, Bismarck. While much bigger than Mandan at over 60,000 residents, well over half of them own their home and just about half are married. While the cost of living is higher in Bismarck, the higher median household income and low unemployment rate contribute to a less stressful life for many of the residents.

  1. Dickinson

Andrew Filer/Flickr We’re entering the top three now, with Dickinson earning third place. The unemployment rate is a low 1.5% among the 23,765 residents, although with the city being one of the fastest growing in the country, may be over 30,000 by now. Commute time clocks in just under 15 minutes.

  1. Valley City

Andrew Filer/Flickr Second place on the list goes to Valley City, or the City of Bridges. The pretty sights are just one thing that make the city full of delight, along with a low cost of living, low unemployment rate, and low commute time.

  1. West Fargo

Google maps Ranking number one on the list is West Fargo and the cheerful 33,597 residents who call it home. The married population is almost at 59% and the city is full of easily accessible amenities for all to enjoy.

Did any of these surprise you? Happiness can come in many forms and might not fit all the factors Zippia used to determine this list, but it does give an interesting perspective. Some people prefer smaller towns to relax and enjoy life in, like these slow-paced towns in North Dakota where life is still simple.
