As we prepare to gather together and give thanks for this year’s Thanksgiving, it’s important to remember that there are always less fortunate people out there who are probably most thankful for the generosity of others. There are plenty of ways to give, donate, and more – especially this holiday season – and North Dakotans definitely know how. According to data recorded for a year by Philanthropy.com, North Dakota residents gave nearly $310,000,000 to charitable organizations over the course of one year. Here are the 10 counties where residents gave the most in relation to the amount they earned:

  1. Pierce County

Andrew Filer/Flickr Pierce County, where the geographical center of North America is located, had a giving ratio of 3.56 percent. This ratio is determined by calculating the AGI (adjusted gross income) by the residents of the county to the charitable contributions reported on income-tax forms.

Pierce County had an AGI of $26,616,000 and gave $947,000 to charity.

  1. McIntosh County

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Coming in at a close 9th above Pierce County is McIntosh County, who had a giving ratio just one percent above Pierce: 3.57 percent. Out of their AGI of $18,998,000, they gave a total of $678,000.

  1. Benson County

Andrew Filer/Flickr Benson County is the first on this list to have given over one million dollars. With an AGI of $28,878,000 and a total of $1,057,000 given to charity, their giving ratio came out to be 3.66 percent.

  1. Sheridan County

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Although Sheridan County may be smaller and less populated than others, they still have a 4.00 percent giving ratio out of their $8,152,000 AGI.

  1. LaMoure County

Jake Barnard/Flickr LaMoure County gave a total of $1,525,000 to good causes during the year. Their giving ratio was at 4.04 percent and that places them at sixth on the list.

  1. Griggs County

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Moving into the top five - out of Griggs County’s $18,862,000 AGI, they gave $778,000 away. That puts their giving ratio to 4.12 percent.

  1. Stutsman County

Jasperdo/Flickr Fourth place goes to Stutsman County, that gave a whopping $10,568,000 to charity in one year. Wow! The county’s giving ratio was 4.49 percent.

  1. Logan County

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Now we’re in the top three. Third place goes to Logan County. Out of their $10,471,000 AGI, they gave 4.66 percent of that to charity.

  1. Kidder County

Andrew Filer/Flickr Second place goes to Kidder County. Through their generosity, they gave $724,000 to charity out of $15,326,000 made - that is 4.72 percent.

  1. Golden Valley County

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Our top, most giving county is Golden Valley County, with a giving ratio that nearly breaks five percent. Their AGI was just $21,907,000 for the whole county, but collectively they still donated $1,062,000 to charities. That ranks them #1 with a giving ratio of 4.85 percent!

This data only accounts for money donated and reported on income tax forms, but there are so many other ways North Dakotans can help out. Volunteer work, food banks, or donating clothes are just a few of the options for giving this season (and all year). Check out local nonprofit organizations in your area by clicking here.
