Finally the temperatures are dropping and many schools are offering up a fall break if there hasn’t been one already. You know what that means: It’s time for a fall day trip! Louisiana has so many charming small towns, it can be hard to pick just one. But Belle Chasse has totally stolen my heart—especially during the fall season. Here’s why:

Belle Chasse is found on the Westbank of the Mississippi River, along LA Hwy 23 as it hugs the river South.

Flickr.com / nola.agent The town is just outside the city limits of New Orleans, but has a charm all its own. The town name means “good hunt” and was named after Col. Joseph Deville Degoutin Bellechasse, a City Council member and the first adjutant general of the Louisiana National Guard.

Once you arrive at Belle Chasse, I would start the day off at Southern Seaplane.

Facebook.com / Southern Seaplane, Inc. Southern Seaplane offers epic tours of the Louisiana wetlands by–you guessed it–seaplane. It’s the largest operation in the gulf south. You’ll find them at #1 Coquille Dr. in Belle Chasse.

Since 1954, Southern Seaplane has been taking people out on beautiful tours of the Louisiana wetlands.

Facebook.com / Southern Seaplane, Inc. It’s truly the most amazing way to understand the complex and rich environment–bayous, swamps, marshes, and estuaries that make Louisiana’s lands such a unique ecosystem.

You can choose from a variety of tours, including the New Orleans Bayou Tour, Save OUr Coast Tour, Cajun Heritage Tour, and the Fort Pike Tour.

After your seaplane ride, head on over to the legendary Ben & Ben Becnel Farmstand, at 14977 Highway 23.

Facebook.com / Ben Becnel’s The Farm This is a 6th generation family owned farm and farmstand that is known far and wide for having some of the absolute best citrus available anywhere in the state.

Their Plaquemines parish farm harvests an incredible variety of citrus every fall, including grapefruit, navel oranges, lemons, tangerines, and loquat.

Facebook.com / Ben Becnel’s The Farm You can stop by their farm stand, beside their citrus grove in Jesuit Bend, to get an up close and personal peek at their trees. They don’t spray or wax their citrus, giving it an amazingly sweet flavor.

And of course, in just a couple of weeks it will be prime Louisiana Satsuma season, and there is no better place to pick up your bag than Becnel’s.

Facebook.com / Ben Becnel’s The Farm I think their satsumas are the absolute best in the whole state!

By this time, you’ve probably worked up an appetite, so you’ll want to head over to Salvo’s Seafood, 7742 Hwy 23.

Yelp.com / Karisma E. This neighborhood favorite is known for it’s amazing seafood boils and friendly atmosphere. It’s been family owned since 1984.

This grilled catfish dish is one of my favorites. The butter seasoning is amazing.

Yelp.com / Michelle B. They even sell their secret Salvo’s Seafood Boil, which makes a great souvenir for your trip!

And of course, before you leave Belle Chasse you will want to stop by the Dairy Dip, 9252 Hwy 23.

Tripadvisor.com / mcali86 They offer up classic favorites like malts and milkshakes, as well as a full menu of sandwiches and other snacks.

A visit here is certainly going to bring a smile to your face and make you feel like you are stepping back in time.

Yelp.com / Sara M. It’s a throwback to a different, simpler time.

And of course the hard shell ‘dip’ can’t be matched anywhere!

Tripadvisor.com / Timzorr You can even get those ‘stuffed’ snowballs with soft serve in the middle. Delicious.

Once you start driving home from a beautiful fall day in Belle Chasse, you’ll be immersed in all the beauty of Louisiana.
