New Jersey has dozens of incredible ice cream shops but we don’t have many ice cream factories. And if you’re looking for an ice cream factory that’s open to the public, you’ll probably have a hard time finding one. Don’t despair! I’ve found one for you, and it’s fantastic.

Arctic Ice Cream

Image/GoogleMaps This is the Arctic Ice Cream Factory. Tucked away on an industrial street in Ewing, it may not look like much, but it is a cool place in more ways than one.

Vintage Shot From 1951

Facebook/Arctic Ice Cream Arctic Ice Cream has been manufacturing ice cream in the Trenton area since 1931. It started out on Hermitage Avenue in Trenton, but has been in its current location (22 Arctic Parkway, Ewing) since the 1940s. It has been a family business since the beginning, and is now run by the original owner’s grandchildren. Even if you’ve never heard of Arctic Ice Cream, you’ve probably had it before. Besides being open to the public, they provide the frozen treat to local businesses like Chick and Nello’s Homestead Restaurant in Hamilton.

Frozen Goodness

Facebook/Arctic Ice Cream They are open year-round, making ice cream three days a week. Summer is (not surprisingly) their biggest season, and they churn out about 4,000 gallons of ice cream every seven days.

Flavors And Treats

Facebook/Arctic Ice Cream Arctic Ice Cream offers over two dozen flavors (some are seasonal) along with cakes and gourmet frozen desserts such as tiramisu and tartufo. Novelty bars (Good Humor, etc.) are available at bargain prices. While everything is delicious, the chocolate peanut butter ice cream has rave reviews - the vanilla peanut butter is just as good.

Old Fashioned Values

Facebook/Arctic Ice Cream Besides being a family business (a young family member is pictured in this retro shot), owner Tom Green has said (according to Hidden Trenton) they’ve had many of the same employees for years. They’re not flashy and they rely on the top notch quality of their ice cream to keep them in business.

Though there aren’t many reviews yet (so few know about this hidden gem), I’ve only heard good things. The staff is friendly and the prices are fair. They’re great for buying in bulk but are also the perfect place to pick up a half gallon and reminisce. For more information and hours, visit their website here.
